THE BOOK OF EPHESIANS
 Acts 18:19-41, 19:23-41: I Cor. 16:8-9  Rev. 2:1-7                                                                                      BELIEVER’S CHAPEL    Rev. John Huntt       3-3-19           McGee

The following four men left Paul in a Roman prison awaiting for a hearing before Nero.  Then the Caesar at that time.  Four men were:

1. Epaphroditus who was from Philippi carry the Epistle to the Philippians (Phil. 4:18). This epistle presents Christian living with Christ as the dynamic. “I can do all
things through Christ which strengthens me.”
2. Tychicus was from Ephesus (Eph. 6:21). Which presents the Church as Christ’s body.  This is the invisible church with Christ is the Head.
3. Epaphras was from Colosse having the epistle to the Colossians (Col. 4:12).  The Church with emphasis as Christ is on the head.
4. Onesimus was a runaway slave from Colosse who had the epistle to Philemon who was his owner (Philemon 10).  Christian living “receive him as myself.

Ephesians reveals the church as God’s masterpiece, a mystery not revealed in the Old Testament (Eph. 2:10).  It is more wonderful than any temple made with hands, constructed of living stones, indwelt by the Holy Spirit. It is Christ’s body in the world to walk as He would walk and to wrestle against the wiles of the Devil.

The place Ephesus had in Paul’s second and third missionary journey. After Paul was called to Macedonia, Spirit forbid him to go toward Ephesus. For a time he preached at Philippi. On the way back, he came by Ephesus seeing opportunity he entered into the synagogue and reason with the Jews. (Acts 18:19). He stayed a short time and went back to Antioch.  During that time, we see recorded in (Acts 18:24-26) that Apollos came to Ephesus and preached John the Baptist message and not the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.  There Apollos was given more accurate teaching of God by Aquilla and Priscila. We see that preaching in Ephesus was between the second and third missionary journey. There Paul gave a far reaching ministry in Ephesus then teaching for two years in the school of Tyrannus. The gospel penetrated into every center of the province of Asia to what we now know as Turkey. The seven churches in Revelation is result of that outreach. It was here a great commotion about the Way.  It was because the silversmiths who made silver shrines for the temple of Diana was losing sales because the people believed In the true God by means of the death and resuurection of Jesus Christ.

Geography of Ephesus was in the very heart of the Roman Empire.  It was along the West coast of Turkey, where it was a leading city. It was a great cultural center and a great religious center.  The climate was pleasing, and it was a wonderful place to visit.  The Roman emperors came to this area for a vacation.  This is where the gospel had its greatest entrance. Ephesus was the principal city of Asia Minor and probably of the eastern section of the Roman Empire. It was only second to Rome.  The city had been founded around 2000 B.C. by the Hittites. It was an Asian City until about 1000 B.C. when the Greeks entered. There one would find a mixture of east and west. . It was one of the great cities of the known world. It was a harbor where one would sail right up to the beautiful wide white marble freeway. There the beautiful temple was the idol of Diana. A goddess of fertility with many breasts where gross immorality took place in the shadow of this temple. Flourishing trade was carried on in the manufacturing of silver shrines or models of the temple. There a great business gain to the craftsmen.   This was probably the high water mark in the missionary labors of Paul. He considered Ephesus his great opportunity and stayed there longer than in any other place. The people of Ephesus had heard more Bible teaching from Paul than did any other people. This is the reason he could write to them the deep truths contained in this epistle. (I Cor. 16: 8-9). Because Paul’s preaching was putting Ephesus silversmiths out of business, there was a great riot in the city. (Act 19:23-41).

The books of Ephesians and Revelation are more logical than the rest. We see in the historical record of Acts where Paul stayed and taught the Gospel longer than the rest. We need to get off this gimmick of methods in how to communicate to the younger generation and how to better organize the church, are about the earthly conduct of the church.  The head of the church is Christ, and He is in heaven.  We are identified with Him. But the feet of the church are down here on the earth. Paul in his writing does not leave us sitting up there in the heavenlies. He says, “Walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called” (Ephesians 4:1). We need both. The doctrinal section is logical. The church is a body, the church is the temple, and the church is a mystery. The practical side of the church is a new man, church will be a bride, and the church is a soldier.
